  • Cap Strip Vertical spacers

Guys, the plans call for the 1/8 X 1/2 vertical spacers on the spar are of 6061, any reason I cant use 2024?

Ask Mark Goldberg for confirmation, but I'm pretty sure the factory only uses 2024 t-3 in the spar construction so that there is no confusion in materials. This was covered somewhere else on the forums here if you care to look around....

Al 2000 series and 6000 series are metallurgically different in several ways...... I would wait until Mark or Bob confirms IMHO.

You can see some of the differences in properties graphically, for your interest, note the differences in specific strength - not such a big deal for spacers, but for cap strips you'd want to get it right: http://www.makeitfrom.com/compare-ma...61-T6-Aluminum

The 6061 is plenty strong for this point and is cheaper, thus the call out. The additional strengths of the 2024 won't hurt at all here.

I spoke about this withBob Barrows several years ago. He said that you can use 2024 instead of 6061 as it is stronger. However, you cannot use 6061 where the plans call for 2024.

The problem I have found was that 2024 was only available in 12 foot where 6061 was available in 6meter lenghts. I coudn't find 6061 in South Africa so I bought a 4"X12" 2024 T3 sheet and cut the cap strips from that. I spoke to Bob about the doubler plates where I joined the cap strips on the rear spar and he was happy with my plan. Much stronger.

Currently, having difficulty locating 2024-T3, 1/8 x 1 1/4 for the main spar cap strips. No luck with Aircraft Spruce, or Alro Metals Anyone know of a good supplier?
              Thanks,

The Airparts webpage only lists 6061-T6, guess I'll have to call.
              Thanks,
