  • Forward Wing Attach Points

Question for the scratch-builders. I have my wings in position on the fuselage for welding on the attach fittings using wing stands and everything is absolutely dead-nuts on...except. Except the distance between the front bolts that hold on the wings. The measurement should be 44 5/8th and I have 44 7/8ths. The distance between the bolt hole in the fitting and the top longeron centerline should be 1 1/16ths and I have 1 3/16ths. In effect I have added 1/8th of an inch to both sides. Three things I can do that I can think of: 1. Remake the front fittings and drill the hole closer. 2. The front is only drilled out to 1/4 and needs eventually to get to 3/8ths. I could do that now and favor the inside of the hole by 1/8th, but that would mean taking the spar hole to it's final diameter as well. 3. Weld it up as-is and not worry about it. The rear mounts I have to redo if I go with just leaving it alone because they are off by that much too (too short). Thoughts?

    Swept wing Bearhawk!
Seriously though, if you were to just use them as is, the top of the wing strut will be aft 1/4" from the design, wing tip 5/8" aft. I'm guessing Bob would agree that there wouldn't be any difference in performance or otherwise. Option 2 seems quite reasonable as well.

I guess I didn't clarify. There are no mounts welded anywhere and there is no reason to "sweep" the wings back. Everything is just perfect, measurement-wise, except for the location of the front mount hole. I would just remake the aft mounts to compensate.

One more thought came to mind. It would be easy to drill the forward mounts to 3/8ths, favoring the inside by an 1/8th. I could put a 3/8ths tubing bushing on each side and still keep the spar hole at 1/4in. Hmmmm...

Looking good Paul! I'm glad to see you're at the point of fitting your wings. It's been a task I've been kind of dreading. I'll be following your lead on this!
