I used the generic cast aluminum steering arm(bolts up into the bottom of the rudder, think it is a J-3 part) on my LSA. It broke upon arrival at Oshkosh this year(and as I think back, it was likely failing for several flights before).
Didn't notice anything different upon landing even though there was a respectable crosswind.
But definitely missed it for the long taxi from the runway to home built camping in the same crosswind. It required lots of brake and more power then prudent or "socially acceptable" in such a crowded enviroment.
Like Whee said, I wouldn't have a problem operating without it in a pinch, but it does make taxiing more convenient.
