  • Deflection for the control stick

    Is there anybody who can give me the deflection of the stick for the aileron, measured at the attach point for the wire at the control stick (at the floor)
    I have 60mm total travel from left to right before it is mechanically restricted
    Have not put on the wings yet so it is impossible to measure the needed deflection
    I construct the seat pillow and want it as thick as possible without any conflict with my legs and the stick with full deflection (right left in the aft position)

    Hi, Bjorn. I would also be interested in this but for a different reason. Trying to approximately locate my autopilot roll servo and determine the max travel. My understanding is it is much less at the stick once the ailerons are attached.

      I wondered about this as well , It has been a while since I built the control sticks but I do remember that I missed one of the measurements slightly and noticing that because of this my travel was reduced.
      I measured 70mm total travel. I also noticed after installing the seats that if I need more travel than this I will probably need smaller legs so I assumed that I have enough.
      Thinking about it now I am wondering what actually stops the aileron travel

          From memory, the travel is about 4", but I can't measure it until the weekend.
          This is a funny one, the stops for the ailerons are in the control stick on my kit, rather than out at the wing (there is no contact there). The opposite of what you typically see. So I simply filed back the relevant piece of metal in the stick assembly until I got the desired travel at the control surface.

            I hope you remember wrong about the 4" . Mine travel only 2 3/8 inch (60mm) measured at the floor
            I thought the physical stop was out on the aileron not at the stick assembly?

              Are you thinking travel from centre to one stop, or stop to stop? I was thinking stop to stop, and it's a rough guess (+/- 30% maybe). But that said, I just did a 100hr inspection and fiddled with that cable a lot.

                Battson, Did you have to do a lot of filing to get the proper deflection or were they pretty close from the factory? My factory stick assembly has 2 3/8" of travel stop to stop.

                  Battson, what I mean is the measure stop to stop to get the right deflection on the aileron. I measured the same deflection (2 3/8") as Whee

                    Hi again - it's the weekend in NZ (hooray, time for a cross country!)

                    I took the measurement, stop to stop (in other words, full left aileron to full right aileron, aileron deflections equal to the plans (or fractionally greater than). At the carry-through bar where the cables attach, the travel distance measurement stop to stop is 3 7/16". I measured three times to be sure.

                            For posterity (and myself) this thread wouldn't be complete without some data on the forward/aft stick travel. After installing the front seats, I am surprised at how much they appear to limit aft travel when the seats are all the way forward. But I haven't looked closely at where the center of its travel is supposed to be. Some real world data/pics would be helpful.

                              That is a hard one to be exact about. To some extent elevator travel at the stick is related to the position of the elevator bellcrank relative to the stick, and the length of that linkage which joins the two. It also depends on where you set the forward and aft limits for the stick, and exactly where your holes are drilled in the elevator horns.

                            All I would add is this:

                            I would wait until you have the wings installed, with cables and control surfaces, and can check for yourself - before you start filing metal off the control stops.
                            I can't provide any reassurance that my control sticks are cable routes are identical to yours!
                            I would hate for you to establish 3 7/16" of travel at the cable attachment point, only to find that in your case it's more than you wanted.

                            I can promise you that measurement is correct in my case, and that's all I can promise!
