  • QB Rebuild

I recently bought a formerly flying quick build Bearhawk that was run into a ditch. It's going to get torn completely down for rebuild, including de-riveting the wings. Besides the crash damage, I'm finding other things I want to change (see pictures for an example). The factory done work was high quality, but I'm finding stuff done by the builder that wasn't. So, a few initial questions:

Is it possible to buy individual hydroformed ribs (and not a complete set)?
Has anyone dealt with oblong holes for the spar to fuselage attach? If so, how?

Those cut-outs should have had a doubler fitted with rivets, per AC41.13.

Like most aircraft designs, Bob didn't leave "fat" in the design for that kind of ruthless metal removal! I asked him about this when I did my tank, and also the manual covers it.

The rough edges and obvious snip marks terrify me, in photo 1! Those are probably going to crack the rib in my opinion.... just a matter of time... I would take a Dremmel with a sanding head and clean those up, finish with some red scotchbrite. Then fit a doubler made of 0.025 ALCLAD.

It may be possible to buy rib packages from the Bearhawk factory to custom order, check with Mark. I know they have supplied such a rib package to other builders rebuilding damaged wings. Don't ask how I know...

I have dealt with oblong spar holes in the wing end fitting.

I fitted a stainless steel bushing, made from a carefully selected steel which which will not form a galvanic cell with aluminium. Provided you don't need to over-size the spar holes more than about 1/16th, then Bob considered this modification acceptable.
    I don't pull really high g-forces anyway....

Jonathan's comments to you are good. As far as oblong holes in the spar/fuselage attach - which holes are oblong? There might be some options depending on which holes are not good.

I do have some wing ribs on hand. But this is something that is handled privately and not on the forum. Mark

You can get over sized shank AN bolts that are, if my memory is alive, .025" OS and about $25 a piece. Another big expense is an adjustable 3/8" reamer. I still have it from 26 years ago when I opened up those same holes too large on a different plane.
