  • What kind of pin is this?

I am trying to remove the arm of the auto pilot servo to make some modification and came across this pin that is used to lock it to the servo motor shaft. Not sure how to remove this, does any one have an idea?

    Thanks
    Hari

It's a roll pin. Tap it out with a punch. It should go all the way through. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spring_pin

Not the greatest use of a roll pin. I've seen them get loose and fall out !!! Not good on an autopilot. Plus you need to be able to shear it by muscling the control stick.

Hari, it looks like you may have struggled with trying to drive it out already. If that is the case, it may have been Loctited in to prevent the infamous falling out. Make sure your punch is ground nicely flat, or better yet a decent roll pin punch. If high strength Loctite was used, you'll need heat. Perhaps a small needle nose Visegrip clamped onto the shaft to act as a heatsink to prevent damage to the unit. Probably a good idea to contact the manufacturer of the unit first for their feedback.

Hari, I'm glad you were able to drive it out. I know that some of the other brands of servos use a soft and weak shear pin somewhere in the system like Dave mentions. Do you know if your servos have that sort of feature somewhere else in the system? If not, it may be worth investigating to see if that was the right pin to use there.
