Well, I am getting old. I've been out of GA for many years, and I am gaining knowledge about the cutting edge products for today's aircraft.
I like the two panels from C-140's below.

I have about umpteen thousand hours flying round dial from 1970-1990 era airplanes....small Cessna's, Baron's, Metroliner, Dash 8, 727's. Today I fly a large flat panel at work.

I like the round dial better...I can sense the fine movement of a needle better than a tape. Now, all these new fangled electronic gizmo gadgets are here, and will be complicating the eventual decision...lighter, cheaper, giving more relevant information.

Is an ems lighter and cheaper than just a tach, oil pressure, and oil temp gage? (But Brooks, you'll save money in fuel and overhaul expenses if you have EGT and CHT for each cylinder). Darn...an E2 EMS from MGL avionics is $750 and weighs 21 oz. To be elegant and curvy, or light weight and square. Can't have both I guess.

I just read in Hiscocks' "Design of Light Aircraft", a great quote from Bill Stout, designer of the Ford Trimotor:

      "Simplicate and add more lightness."

I'm with you Brooks. I just like steam gauges. I'm planing to install steam for VFR, if I ever decide to go IFR I'll add some glass. I am going to install an engine monitor though.

These instruments for gliders are classy looking and Have great detailed movement of the airspeed needle at stall speed.

I really like the white faces. Very sharp.

If you really want to save weight, but still like round gauges - you can get digital steam gauges.

          Example of the weight saving:

Digital AH gauge, Ray Allen Company - weight 189 grams (0.4 lbs)
Vacuum AH gauge, Falcon company - weight 984 grams (2.1 lbs)

I was thinking exactly the opposite!
