  • Where to mount an IPad?

I became quite accustomed to using my iPad in flight in my old Cessna (mounted to the control Yoke).

For those of you that use an update for maps etc. In the BH have you found a place to mount it that is "out of the way" but still visible and useable. I don't have any panel real estate available for this.

I'd love to see pictures or hear ideas of what you are using.

A super cub driver I know had good results putting his iPad up high. Near the top front corner of the left window. Completely away from the panel.

In my current airplane, I find the best place is on a RAM suction-cup mount, attached to the lower left-hand corner of the window. I adjust it so it's blocking none of the instruments, and it only obscures a very small portion of the view outside the airplane. Not sure how that would work on a Bearhawk, but it's worth a try. If you do use the suction cup mount, make sure you remove the suction cup mount after each flight, and re-stick it before each flight, so it's at maximum holding power for your flight. (They also make a double-suction-cup mount, but I haven't used it.)

As an alternative, you could use one of the RAM ball mounts that attach 1/2"-1" tubing to attach pretty much anywhere there is exposed tubing. That way you could put it anywhere you want in the cockpit. You could also use their ball adapter and screw it directly onto your panel in an open spot, then use the appropriate-length RAM "arms" to position the iPad wherever you want it. They offer the arms in several lengths (1.75", 3.25", and 5.25").

On my Patrol, I've planned the panel so that the iPad Mini can be installed just to the left of the Dynon SkyView screen, in an upright manner. I might even use one of the SkyPad docks. I think it's going to work out great.

I thought of having one which folds out from the side down by my legs, or above my head like a sun visor - but both those are bad ideas for one reason or another.

I moved some stuff around to clear enough panel space in the end, but I have yet to install the pad I bought. I really only want it for the airport cards and topographic maps, the most annoying thing to me is flying past mountains and though passes over and over, but not knowing their name.

When I'm not using it, I stuff it vertically between the front two seats. The original ipad sticks up about 3 inches, and the ipad mini sits flush. When using it, it sits in my lap, not unlike a cat. It's even slightly warm sometimes, though it does not purr. When we were flying up the valley to Bob's back in October, we flew through a bit of turbulence that caused it to float up to about eye level, but that's the only time it has been displaced substantially. That turbulence was also strong enough to kill the engine momentarily, to give it some scale.

I use a RAM mount at the right side of the instrument panel, so the iPad mini is at an azimuth from me of about 2:00 o'clock. In this position it is also somewhat visible from the right seat. I bought the mini originally because I thought it was the perfect size for the cockpit. In my opinion a full size iPad is too big. Don't even think about an iPad Pro.
