  • Patrol with O-320

Was wondering if anyone has any feed back or opinions on putting a O-320 150hp on a Patrol? Would there be a considerable performance difference vs a 180hp? Does the 180hp just have better clImb, but everything about the same? If I was buying a engine I would buy a 180hp but have a overhauled 150hp sitting here. Also it is a conical mount, any issues or reasons not to use that? Regardless of either engine I want to run a fixed pitch prop. Looking for a good performing Bushplane but it does not have to be a extreme Bushplane if you know what I mean. Any or all thoughts, good or bad I would be glad to hear them. Thanks Rob

The only thing I might do is to use the higher-compression pistons to up the engine to 160 HP. That extra 10 "almost free" HP adds a lot of oomph!

I neglected to mention that it also makes it unlikely that auto-gas would work acceptably... But it you can live with 100LL (or whatever follows that), it's almost free horsepower.

Last week I purchased an O-320 B2B, conical mount for my four place, that should tell you my opinion. It does have Lycon rebuild including porting mod - only 2017 SMOH. Looking forward to having a an engine all broken in so I can focus on the plane. With that many hours, I'm also hoping that will help in the discussion with the tax man when the time comes.

Bergy, negative on the drawing other than in Tony Bingelis' Firewall Forward book. My engine is in the shop on a pallet, if there are any dimensions off of it you'd like me to get for you, I'm game.

Lycon porting +10 hp, non integral cam lycoming made for a couple years that is advanced +5 hp, leading edge exhaust...an O320 B2B should push 190 hp. Use the light weight starter, a modern alternator and a Catto prop....less than 300 pounds for the firewall forward. That's what I've built...less the prop, had to go with a 82-44 borer prop STC'd for my Pacer.

Thanks for the reply's. Sounds like the 0-320 will work fine and I will go with that.
