Wonder if we'll hear what caused the engine failure... Glad no one was hurt!

I'm surprised it's even an incident. It wasn't even a reportable event.

The airplane is largely just fine save the engine. I have wild guess as to what happened, but we'll wait and see with the tear down.

He landed in a meadow within the boundaries of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. There were issues involved with the ground recovery of the aircraft within the refuge boundary. In essence the refuge responsible agency needed assurance the FAA didn’t need to look at the aircraft before being moved, hence the notification. At least that is what I have been told.

I'm just going to put this right here. https://www.lycoming.com/sites/defau...Procedures.pdf

It is not optional regardless of the prop you have. No part of it is optional.

For anyone looking to buy an airplane with a previous prop strike and they didn't do a full rebuild, you need to see #8 in the logbook, or consider the engine a core only and the airplane non-airworthy.

I read the SB. Where does it say there needs to be a full rebuild?

It doesn't. I wrote "if they didn't do a full rebuild"

Gotcha. BTW, if anyone needs some of the Loctite food-grade anti-seize let me know. I have MORE than a lifetime supply!

Just came across this thread. The dowl on the end of the crank sheared. Drive gear stopped turning, and so did the motor. I landed in an area that had burned last year. Since it was a federal wildlife area, I needed FAA and NTSB to approve the release of the aircraft.
Should be flying again better than ever this spring.

Glad to hear it. Same thing happened to my Uncle in his Cherokee 6, didn't turn out so well.
          Working...
