  • Heading to Oshkosh / Airventure 2022

Today (7/21) I departed Lake Norman Airpark (14A), (just north of Charlotte, NC) for the first leg of my trip to Oshkosh.

I headed north to spend the night in Louisa, Virginia (KLKU) where I will pick up my friend Scott Brady. Scott flew with me last year and is a great co-pilot / navigator.

Friday morning (7/22) we will begin the longest leg of our trip. 585nm west to Rock Falls, IL (KSQI) where we will spend Friday night. Same stop we made last year.

Saturday morning (7/23) we will get up bright and early to make trip north into Wisconsin in time for the 7am opening of the Fisk Arrival. That worked out well for us last year, so we will do it again this year.

Have a great flight. Unfortunately I'm not going to get there this year. Hope everyone has a great time!

We made it to Rock Falls, Illinois with stops in Chillicothe, Ohio and Logansport, Indiana for fuel and stretch breaks. Pretty strong headwinds gave us ground speeds as low as 89mph.

Woke up this morning (4am) in Rock Falls to severe T-Storms in the area. 70mph winds predicted. So we will not make our early morning launch for the 7am Fisk Arrival. But we have the whole day to get there....

Rob, what is your prop diameter? Are those 26” wheels? Trying to get a handle on what my prop clearance will be

I have a 82” prop and will be doing early flight phases with 850’s and a 10” tailwheel, hoping I have clearance. GY 26’s should be a bit of insurance

I've got GY26's, same prop and 10" tailwheel. So far happy with everything on gravel bars and airstrips. I've ordered 29" ABW's, but that's more about reducing the airframe abuse on rough ground. The GY26's are surprisingly good. The big change for me was learning to land on the mains and keep the tailwheel clear (just off the ground). Made a huge difference to airframe abuse. Hoping the 29's will do the same again.

I am trying not to buy ABW…. Just Don’t Do It

At the Bearhawk booth the morning after the thunderstorms came through. The Bearhawk was a bit damp on the inside. Last year it was soaked and Mark showed me where I needed weatherstripping at the top of the cargo door. That helped tremendously. 68036256307__1D07D580-FC4D-4357-8D1C-D78D864D907F.jpg

Looks good Rob, I like the tires! If you get a chance could you post a pic of how you've down the weather stripping ? I've got the same issue.

Nev Here is the weatherstripping I used. I hope you can see it. Works very well so far. I bought this at the local home remodeling center (Home Depot).
