Yep, the BH can fly really slow, FlySto says the average of every single landing in my Companion averages 39 mph IAS. My three today were 36, 38, and 36 mph.

I talk a lot with Joe Mason (Patrol up in Idaho) and we were discussing takeoff stuff along with taxi techniques the other day and he mentioned when he went to flaps 3 he got shorter.

So to answer your question, my average liftoff according to FlySto was 54 mph IAS. My two Flaps 3 takeoffs today were both 48 mph IAS, so that is 6 mph slower and I was a minimum of 125’ shorter even though the plane was ready to fly before I let if off the ground. I think once I get dialed in with the Flaps 3 I will have a 150-175’ shorter takeoff roll. That is great to have in the toolbox!

My RPM at liftoff for the 20 takeoffs previous to today was 2358.9 rpm. I thought this might be a bit low, so I contacted the A&P who oversaw the Sensenich certification process and he said that my engine (O-360) has the best torque at that rpm range, so I am good to go. I am on pin #7 for my 82” STOL Sensenich GA prop. I am keeping things as they are as I love my cruise speeds.

I have been taking off in my 4-place with flaps 2. I hold neutral elevator, as soon as the tail lifts add a little back pressure and lift off. My liftoff speeds average 38 knots. Distance with just myself and half fuel is 450' from our 6470' field. I am now anxious to try flaps 3 takeoffs. Thanks for the info Jay!

I have been taking off in my 4-place with flaps 2. I hold neutral elevator, as soon as the tail lifts add a little back pressure and lift off.

Thats the technique I've been using for a short takeoff (don't need it much in an BH). They fly off very nicely from the 3-point attitude. I don't use this technique often as it can be prone to tail-wheel shimmy.

If I'm on a rough strip then F3 allows the tail to be lifted a bit earlier - I raise the tailwheel a couple of inches until it flies off from the tail low, wheeler attitude.

Love that liftoff speed, I was at 48 mph in that video but waited a bit too long. 38 knots is 43.7 mph so I definitely can get better with my technique

Flaps 3 definitely makes a big difference shortening up the takeoff roll for me. You have to dump flaps pretty quick after lift off to avoid overspeed. Flaps 2 is a little more forgiving in that respect. Flaps 3 is just so much more impressive. Not that we're trying to impress anyone...

Agreed, I dumped Flaps 3 quickly as it does not take long to get to 75 mph IAS
