  • 4-place Builders with Continentals

I'm looking for contact info for builders that have used fuel injected Continental engines: IO-470 or IO-360. I know there is a BH in Brazil with a IO-360 but I can't find his contact info. Also, I read in the archives from the yahoo groups about a couple guys planing to use a IO-470. If anyone knows how to get a hold of these guys or anyone else with a IO Continental in a 4-place please let me know.

Do you need to make your search BH specific? I am not sure what info you're after, but I guess other operators (non-BH) might be able to offer some helpful information?

It does need to be BH specific; I'm looking for fitment information mostly. Performance information would be nice too but I think I have a pretty good idea how the will perform.

I don't know if you need IO specific but there is an O-470 powered bearhawk here in Jacksonville. It's actually on Barnstormers now, so if you want to talk with him his name is Ernie....his contact info is with the ad. I've got a video on youtube of flying it about a month ago. I don't think he ran into any issues getting it to fit.

I talked to Ernie a while back. He is a heck of a good guy and I'm sorry to see him have to sell.

I am looking for IO specific information. I read in the Avipro manual that there is some concern that the IO470 will not fit because the induction system will hit the firewall. There are several different induction systems so I'm wondering if one of them will fit.

Creating a S/S recessed pocked in the firewall would not be a show-stopper, lots of Cessnas etc do this. I assume the induction is on the centreline, so there shouldn't be any structural steel in the way. Maybe you already thought of that, and there's some reason why it wouldn't work.

I have thought about that, my Luscombe had a dishpan firewall, I'm just not sure where the interference is.

Could you use the updraft intake off of a O470 and use an after market updraft injection system?

That is probably possible but I can't figure out why the IO470K / N system wouldn't work, everything is under the engine similar to a O470.

I don't have a drawing of the "N" but I think your right on the "K"

The guy in NZ building a 4-place with TCM 470 just made contact with us, on largely unrelated matters but still talking about the engine install. I will see if he can share anything which might be some help.

The IO/O-470 and IO/O 520 do fit with the right induction.... but they are heavier. My Bearhawk has a permold (gear driven alternator). The engine was a TSIO520WB. Heavy 7th stud case, large journal crank. Now has 8:5-1 ECI pistons and nickel ceramic bores. The induction and injection system is from the IO 520 D. Using Gami injectors. The prop flange is 52-1/4" ahead of the datum. I have 1/4" of clearance between the fuel lines at the throttle body and the fire wall. I'm have tempted to modify my engine mount to create a swing out mount...that would move the engine forward a bit. My engine with stock parts, alternator, starter, large Bendix 1200 series mags, rear engine mounted oil cooler, exhaust manifolds...everything less the prop, baffles and engine oil weighs 462 pounds. I have a light weight starter and alternator...don't know the weight difference yet? Electronic ignition should shed another 10 pounds. To convert the IO to the O series the best bet is to contact Texas Skyways....I think? My engine mount weighs...sh..t don't remember. The carbon fiber cowl weighs 18 pounds....I'll have to fire up a real computer to post pics of the engine/mount and cowl. There is a way to build a lighter 520... But that requires using the lighter case and small journal crank. The IO520BA is a good candidate...the limit is 285 hp and 2700 rpm. The weight should come in at 431 pounds. If converting to carbureted I'm told the weight will be 417 pounds. One thing I did discover....Continental does have a dynafocal mount engine. The IO520C. The issue with that engine mount would be the induction. I bought the mounts to try for the dynafocal mount...but the induction interfered. It was to late in my build to take another direction... That would be to use the TSIOG 520 cylinders. The induction is on top, exhaust ports on the bottom like the IO550's. Mark M.

If anyone's got O470 motor mount pics they can post they would greatly appreciated! I also plan on using a O470-4 in my build. Thanks.
