  • Oil Filter

I guess I should have just asked here first, oh well. Thought I would post in case anyone else was thinking the same.
I have used the Casper Labs angled spin on adapter a few times before and really like it for cleaner oil changes and thought it would fit from my preliminary guestimate before the engine was hung. NOT! Filters too long by about 3/16" , oh well, straight adapter it is.

That's no good! So close. Looks like a good idea, I can see how that would have made oil changer a lot tidier.

I used the remote bracket Bob supplies, and mounted it on the firewall. It's easy to drain down the filter by punching a small hole in the bottom, before you spin it off. Oil flows straight down into a bucket beneath without leaving a mess on the engine / firewall.

I have one on my firewall as well and have a technique to drain the oil using a plastic bag cut open taped to the firewall and gathering the oil into a bucket below. Not too messy at all. Mark

Reviving this old post with a few questions. Working on welding my firewall tabs and supports to the extent I can plan for. Trying to determine if going with Bob's screen approach, a spin on filter adapter, or a Airwolf system that is mounted on the firewall.

B&C Specialities products makes a similar adapter for Maules. It is oriented downward at about the 6:30 position. For those that have been down this rode, are there other things that should be considered??? Holes in this approach??

I'd like to avoid the extra hoses and fittings if possible for the firewall mount. I'm pretty sure I can't be as disciplined as Bob on the 25 hour oil changes with the screen. I'm hoping some of my trips will be at the 25 hour mark when I turn for home!

And Mr. President, a followup question --- I've been around a few Lycoming oil changes. Anyone check the suction screen??? If so, how often?? I haven't seen that done. Is it just when there are oil pressure problems?? This will be my first rebuilt Lycoming and I've got a lot to learn.

        Thanks too much,

          What is Bob's screen process?

I would want a disposable paper element filter of some kind, so I can keep track of whether my engine is making metal.

Also, doing all my own changes - I think oil and filters plus the labour adds up in terms of time, effort, and money. 50 hours comes around too often already (4 times per year). The oil still looks almost new at 25 hours.

From my limited conversations with Bob, he likes to keep things simple and light, and ain't scared of extra work to do so. He recommended sticking with the original Lycoming screen and no paper filter, which requires a 25 hour oil change interval. He is absolutely right being an advocate for frequent oil changes. I just like to have the option for a 50 hour oil/filter change. Down here in Louisiana (LouZyana per Mark) the constant high humidity is the biggest issue for oil contamination and engines. Got to run it.

            Oh OK.
Bob recommended a remote mounted oil filter to me, didn't mention the no filter option as far as I recall.
Like I said, I would run a mile from no paper filter. If you build and repair your own engines (cheaply) I guess that changes things a lot.

I'm getting my engine ready for assembly. Any new info on an oil filter adapter that works on an IO-540?

There are several auto racing remote filter adapters available. Some a little beefier (and heavier) than the one Bob was selling. The remote installation means a couple more oil lines behind the engine, but I have never had a problem with them. Mark

          Paul,
Sorry for the slow response. Been having trouble posting to the list for a while. Combination of operator error and this computer being smarter than me. I had been exchanging emails with Greg Jones at B&C Speciality Products. His notes say that their filter adapter will work on a Bearhawk with O-540. I was gonna take the "trust but verify" approach. Once I get the engine mounted, was gonna check the clearances and dimensions myself. If close, then give Greg a call. They have dimension drawings on their website. I'm just too slow to be anymore help. Sorry.
