  • Stringers

    I was informed by Aircraft Spruce that they no longer have the 5/16 x 3/4 x.032 aluminum stringer material.

    I have been trying to find a local (Indianapolis) source for the frame material used for removable window screens. Some of the dimensions for this material are very close to the Aircraft Spruce product. The issue here is the length of the material is 10 ft. or less. I have found sources for the frame material but the freight costs will be very high.

    I notices that in the fuselage in the Bearhawkin! site, they used wood. If I go to wood, what dimensions are people using?

    Hi Steve...

    I have 14 sticks of that stringer material from A/S that are just over 6ft long that I won't be using. They sold it in 12ft sticks if memory serves me right. That will be enough for one BH.

    I was able to get complete length extruded stringers from Mark G on the last shipment to AK so I won't be using this material. I also have the solid aluminum 3 inch long splice plates that slip inside. It's still in the A/S box. Let me know if you are interested.

      You may be my best option. Let me keep looking locally. I hate to think what the shipping will be.

        Steve, have you considered Mark Goldberg's stringers? I used the Aircraft Spruce material, and I really don't think it's up to the job, especially when compared with Mark's.

          Jared and Steve, I don't really ship those stringers because they are 16 ft long and a hassle. We deliver them with kits if the customer wants. Most all do. Mark

            Mark;

            What are the dimensions of your stringers? They appear to be 1" by ?. And what is the wood?

            There is a lumber company here in Indy that only deals with high end woods. They have carried aircraft plywood in the past. I was thinking that I would see what they might have in spruce or other woods that might work.

            I have looked at the Univair Aircraft extrusions and they are available in 13.5 ft. lengths. Which is not bad. But I will still need to splice a few stringers.

              The stringers we have available for kit customers are aluminum (5052) extrusions (.050 wall). I think they are 3/8" wide by 1" tall if I remember correctly. Wood will work fine if you get strong wood and orient the grain to take advantage of the wood's strength. Mark

                Thanks Mark.

                I am going with the Univair stringers. I expect that I will have to splice 2 of the stringers. I will post something when I get them installed.

                Thanks for the inputs.
