  • Canadian Patrol Construction Update

Hi All, thaught I would send an update on my progress . Received my QB kit Nov 4th and have been busy. Ive attached a few pics . Wings are done except a few inspection plates and wingtips. I have pitch, Roll and yaw servos installed. Fabric is on the fuselage and the poly spray is complete. Just finishing the fabric on the elevators now. I had originally ordered the IO-382 wildcat from Aerosport but they called me 2 weeks later and said they were not available till late 2018, same as the IO-375 etc. I had to go with the IO-360. I had it ported and flow matched, fuel injection and dual p-mags with 9.5-1 comp pistons. I have the Hartzell trailblazer CS prop , hoping this is a good combination. The engine was shipped Friday so should be here for Wednesday. I am painting the plane Wednesday so should be able to hang the engine this weekend. Dynon is building me the quick panel system with the HDX and Auto pilot etc. It’s to be here within 10 days too. That’s all for now.

    Mike

I assume from the title of the thread you are in Canada.... How did you manage to get your pre-cover inspection arranged and done so quickly? Are there a lot of inspectors in your area?

      Cheers

Hi Mike, can you add some details on where you got your seat, price and what is the plan for the rear seat?
        Thanks

            Hi Guys,
No there is no inspectors in my area. I am in Southern Saskatchewan and the inspector had to come 5hours. I lined him up before the kit arrived as he had to do the 51% inspection and the pre-cover on the same day. Kit came it at 59% so all good. Pre-cover can get done right away because they can inspect inside the fuselage when covered. As for the seat, I basically took a seat from a Glasair sportsman, cut it up and combined it with my bearhawk seat to form the structure. I modified the seat foam and back then had it recovered with the leather. The back seat will have the same 3 colored leather but is built from scratch due to the width.

Awesome! That is good info for quickbuild guys here in Canada. Have the inspector look at everything and sign it off when it arrives. Sure says a lot about the quality and completeness of the kit.

WOW, great job!! Can you post a photo of a schematic of your final paint scheme, or do we have to wait, which looks like won't be that long anyway. ;-)

Forgive my ignorance. My assumption was it would have to be inspected before wings/fuselage closed, then when finished, before flight. I have been out of this for a long time. Does the kit need to be inspected before you start building?

You are correct. But Avipro hasn’t submitted the paperwork to be an approved 51% kit in Canada so anyone that buys one can add the $800 to have the MDRA come do the initial. Then we have to get Precover which is basically before you close up the wings.. then the final before flight

Airplane stuff costs a lot. I have only "coughed" a few times. One of them was pricing seat foam/upholstery. In the interest of expediancy, I will just buy seats off the shelf. But that is 4-6 times what it should cost. My second set will be cheaper.

The link below is a bearhwak thread on the subject of seat foam that that Jim Parker shared. I also used them. I think I got mine from the Discounted Overstock inventory.
