Sorry to hear the news but glad Bob will recover. I have built many types of steel tube fuselages over the last 38 years but when I built my Patrol fuselage I told several of my friends that if you're going to be in an accident this is the fuselage you want to be sitting in. Tough as a NASCAR roll cage. Wish you a speedy recovery Bob.

Thanks for the updates Mark. Despite his injuries, that’s about the best outcome one can hope for in that situation - a testament to the design (and designer!). We’re keeping Bob in our thoughts and wishing him a full recovery, and soon.4-Place Model 'B' Serial 1529B (with many years to go...)

Just had a short conversation with Bob. He sounded pretty good. I told him that we needed him here last Friday to help unload the trailer with kits from the factory. He answered that he wouldn't of been much help. I told him that at least he could have supervised me and Mike. We actually used for the first time some "spreader bars" to unload that Bob had designed for us in the unloading. Of course they worked well.
He said that the x rays showed quite a bit of hardware that the surgeons installed in his leg. I asked him if he specified the kind of material that was used. He laughed and said it was probably titanium.
They are hoping Bob can go home to Virginia this week to a rehab place or alternately a hospital if he needs more care than a rehab facility offers. But he sounded good.
I told him of all the best wishes from everyone on the forum and elsewhere. He was appreciative. Mark

You did not specify if one or both legs were injured (broken). Getting around on one leg is very doable. Glad to hear that he is in good spirits and is improving. Send him our best wishes.

Hi Bob - My most earnest prayers for a speedy end to the pain, good rehab and good mending. Was it your tibia ? If yes, I been there (skiing in the 1970's, had to have it rebroken several times), whatever you do go slow and get the finest imaging along the way so they can accurately track its healing. Hopefully the hospital will allow you to keep welding equipment in your room so you can fashion a reaching device or two ? Take Care !

I’ve been off the Forum for a few days taking care of some other business, and just heard about the accident from a neighbor...soooo pleased that his injuries were not worse. Bob and the Mrs were by my place a few weeks ago. We had a nice visit and he offered several helpful suggestions, including the elevator trim cable tension tip that was part of the last BearTracks; it really helped. Best wishes, Bob, and God speed for a quick recovery.

I spoke with Bob twice yesterday. The first time I called him about some technical information that I sent him to review on something called a Gurney flap. A builder in Alaska told me about it. Basically, it is a little angle on the bottom trailing edge of the outboard end of the flap. Maybe 1/3 the total span of the flap in the area outboard of the tail surfaces. This builder told me it made normal, straight flaps behave like Fowler flaps. He had seen reports on the effect of this on a Cessna 195. Turned ineffective flaps into very useful flaps.
Bob gave me his thoughts and suggested we find someone to try it out - and he gave me some details of what he thinks would be a good starting point. That is why I am mentioning it here. If anyone would like to try it out - contact me and I will provide Bob's guidance on how to do it. Basically, this can be tried out with double sided tape to see its effectiveness. I think I will post this under it own "topic".
Later in the day Bob called me about something else. My point in all this is that I am trying to keep Bob engaged and thinking about technical things which should be therapeutic after laying around for a few weeks. He sounds good and interested in what is going on. He is moving a little better as well. Mark

Mark, So is Bob home and feeling well enough to take phone calls? I’ve talked to him several times during my build and wanted to tell him my plane is up and flying.Scratch Built 4-place Bearhawk. Continental IO-360, 88" C203 McCauley prop.

He is still in rehab. I expect he will be there for another week or so but do not really know. Next time I speak with him I will ask him if he is up to getting calls from builders. Mark

Please advise everyone that it would be best for them to email their questions to BearhawkOnline@gmail.com and I will take them to Dad. After he sees them I will reply with his advice.Last edited by Maria Barrows Harris; 05-14-2019, 04:38 PM.
