  • Running in the Brakes

The directions I have seen for running in the metallic brake pads is to accelerate to 40 to 45 miles an hour and brake to a stop, then repeat and check if the brakes hold at full power. Seems pretty risky in a taildragger, getting awful close to flying speed. Wondering how some of you have accomplished this.

I would not go that fast, but also would not skip the run in. Go as fast as you are comfortable with, and if that's 30, then that's what it is. You might have to repeat the process more but you will get a feel for when they start becoming effective. New pads and disks can feel a little scary at first but it gets better quickly.

Pretty sure I did not go that fast. I can probably dig up my Grove instructions tomorrow evening if it would be helpful.
      Almost flying!

I wondered the same thing, then my mechanic friend said just go and use them, they will be fine. I did taxi around a bit and used the brakes. Normal speed, maybe a bit quicker and they work just fine. It didn't take long at all. Cleveland 199-62 setup. YMMV
