  • Battery location

Im looking for input on where to mount my battery on my 4 place. I am using the PC 680 battery. I know many are placing it under the seat which I am leaning on doing. I would prefer to mount it on the firewall however if possible. Any input pro or con on battery placement would be appreciated. Thanks

4 cylinder or 6? It’s not unusual to put a battery on the firewall on 4 cal models, and somewhere in the middle or aft for 6 cyl, for W&B purposes.

I have a new battery mounted on the firewall which I just started testing. I notice most batteries have the same thermal limit of about 140F (60C), and some have a lower rating when charging.

I was concerned about how hot the battery gets, it could easily be 60 degrees Celsius. This reduces battery life, at least.

I placed my battery as shown in the picture below. Actually, I’ll have another placed on the right hand aside also. My experience with this same placement on a previous BH was good but on that one the owner installed a single lawn tractor battery.

The higher thermal range was a selling point for me to swap the pc680 to the Earthx. I was getting about a year out of the pc680s.

Those PC680s must be very light. I’ve got a Concorde AGM battery, and it’s a weighty thing.

Been using the same PC680 on the firewall since 2010, no problems but I'll probably replace it with an Earth X this year. Tyson did some temp testing on his firewall mounted battery and saw about 115 degrees max at that location

A .016 stainless firewall seems great for fire protection at a reasonable, but unable to handle a heavy battery attached to the thin sheet. How are you making the attachment of the battery strong and sturdy to withstand a number of G's? AL angle secured to the fuselage tabs on the cabin side maybe? Doubler plate?

Tim, the options are pretty much as described above. On my 4 place I have the 680 under the right front seat. Over the years builders have mounted it under a front seat, on the side boot cowl, and on the firewall. On my Patrol the 680 is on the firewall. All these locations have worked OK. The shorter thick cables when placing the battery on the firewall does save some weight. Otherwise - all are OK places. Mark

They both have the same thermal range?

                        Same as what whee shows
And yes, you will need to provide some support back to the frame members, use doublers / stiffeners etc.
